D&D Next Playtest — Session 1

Somehow Bob was able to con the WOTC folks in to letting us be a part of the first-run of playtesting for D&D Next. Now that the playtest has gone public, we’re no longer unable to post our play sessions because of the NDA. Here is our first night of playing with v1 of the D&D Next playtest rules.

A quick run down of the people in our group:

  • Bob - Alec Raithe, Human Rogue – Swashbuckler Theme
  • Greg - Valyse Terrywind, Half Elf Fighter – Explorer Theme
  • Katie - Jaina Daleborn, Human Cleric – Witch/Commoner Theme
  • Richard - “Hobnail”, Dwarf Fighter – Gladiator Theme
  • Joren - Arioch, Elf Wizard – Explorer Theme

George and some friends ran another playtest group parallel to ours…I’m not sure if they recorded it as well.

This first night is broken in to 4 parts…each is about an hour. At the end of part 4, we talk a little about our initial impressions. Katie kept a journal while we played and wrote up some really funny session recaps — mix of in-character and meta language thats awesome. I’ll dig those up and post em as well if she doesn’t mind!

Noooo! Why did caves kill Meepo? lol

I like that roleplaying allows you to act out people/personalities you aren’t, or allows a place to let out your dark side. Given that, the people you are playing with are either good character actors or closet sociopaths for wanting to torch those innocent kobolds.

Arioch is definitely the ballsiest wizard I’ve ever seen, walking into a room outnumbered 50 to 1 hoping to negotiate.

Kobalds are evil creatures. They can’t NOT be evil even if it is in their best interest. Promises mean nothing from them and even if they are scared enough of you right now to promise never to hurt another living thing in an hour they will be hungry, you will be gone and that baby will look very tasty.

In short: I advocate genocide of demonstrably evil fantasy monsters and encourage you to vote for the bond issue to expand the pogroms.

    Thank you.

Nick called you a power gamer, you gonna take that? :) . Did everyone one get the same test material?

I started playing in 3e, buying the core books and a few others. Then a few months later they came out with 3.5e. Was there something broken about 3e or was it just a cash grab?

In my opinion, 3.5e got increasingly cluttered and unbalanced with new books. This may have been the reason for 4e, along with simplifying it in hopes to gain a larger more casual audience. Since i only tried 4e once, I’m not sure how much they used of it for 5e. Overall 5e sounds closer to 3.5e or pathfinder than anything else.
